Recycled water is a primary water resource for Southern Nevada. Thanks to our unique system of return flow credits, we are able to augment our Colorado River water allocation by 40% by treating our wastewater to extremely high standards and returning it to the Colorado River system.
In effect, our communities already have a 100% recycling system in place. By capturing wastewater from our homes, schools and businesses and treating it to meet high environmental standards, it can be used for irrigation and industrial purposes or as an augmentation to our potable water supply through return flow credits.
Over a period of several months, the Clean Water Coalition and Southern Nevada Water Authority worked together to study our current water recycling activities and develop the recommendations contained in these documents. We’ve looked carefully at recycled and graywater systems around the world in an effort to develop and implement policies that make sense for our region.
The documents on this page include:
· Stakeholder Research conducted by the CWC and SNWA for guidance in developing these policies;
· A Graywater Research Technical Memo prepared by our consultants on the appropriate uses of graywater around the world;
· The CWC/SNWA Recycled Water Policy adopted by our governing boards in December 2008, and;
· The Southern Nevada Regional Water Recycling Study, which summarizes all of the information in these documents and presents the findings of our study efforts.
Each of these documents are now an important part of our guiding principles for how we manage our water resources in Southern Nevada.
